How to Open and Edit DWG Files: A Practical Guide
Learning how to open DWG files is essential for engineers, architects and CAD technicians working with technical drawings. This guide explains how to open, edit, save and troubleshoot DWG drawings using GstarCAD, including practical advice for maintaining file compatibility.
What is a DWG file?
DWG is a commonly used drawing format for CAD geometry and associated drafting information. A DWG may contain layers, blocks, dimensions, layouts and links to external reference drawings.
Step 1 — Make a working copy
Keep the original file unchanged. Save a copy in a dedicated project folder, ideally alongside referenced images, fonts and external DWG files supplied by the project team.
Step 2 — Open the drawing
Launch a DWG-compatible CAD application such as GstarCAD and use Open to choose the drawing. Check whether the program reports unresolved external references, proxies or missing fonts.
Step 3 — Check the drawing
Inspect units, scales, visible and frozen layers, model space, layouts and key dimensions. Do not assume a drawing is correct just because it opens without errors.
Step 4 — Edit and save
Make a small controlled edit, then use Save As if exchanging the result with another team. Select a DWG file version supported by the recipient and keep a backup.
Step 5 — Verify the final output
Reopen the saved file. Check lineweights, hatches, dimensions and PDF plotting. Confirm referenced files can be found on a second workstation where practical.
Common DWG issues
Missing text often points to absent fonts. Incomplete drawings can be caused by missing xrefs or hidden layers. Unexpected drawing size or geometry can indicate a units or scale mismatch.
